The thermal behavior of DC motors

Basic thermal model and application.

This e-learning tutorial describes the main characteristics of the heating of motors and gearheads. A simple thermal model serves as a base for the calculation of motor temperatures in thermal equilibrium as well as during heating and cooling.

In the second part these concepts are used to judge the drives from a thermal point of view for different load situations: Continuous operation, intermittent operation, operation cycles and short-term operation.

Learning objectives
The participants …
- understand the thermal models of gearhead and motor and are able to calculate motor and gearehad temperatures in thermal equilibrium.
- are able to estimate the max. continuous torque and current for different ambient temperatures and mounting conditions.
- are able to calculate critical parameters for intermittent and cyclic operation such as maximum winding temperature, maximum on-time, minmal off-time, maximum and effective currents.
- know the approximations and limitations for short-term operation and can estimate the limits of overload operation: maximum on-time, maximum motor current.

Target group
Engineers and product developers who want to know more about the heat management of drives.
